Be aware of distraction burglary
|
Here at the Homeowners Club we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to make you feel safe and secure in your own homes. So we wanted to pass on what we know about distraction burglary and so you know what to be aware of. We have learned that cruel fraudsters are targeting the elderly, with two recent incidents. A 99 year old from Mayfair, Tilehurst had a visitor at 8.30pm claiming they were the police and that a neighbour had reported a burglary at their address, 30 minutes later an 85 year old was targeted in the same area. Luckily both individuals realised something wasn’t quite right and called the actual police. A second incident targeted two women, one 87 and the other 57. They were both approached by two men claiming to be officials from the water-board coming to check the pipes and asked for money for their services. Once again the police were notified. |

John McNicholas, Reading’s Crime Reduction Advisor has warned ‘Burglars use a variety of disguises to target vulnerable people and in some cases; this includes dressing up as a police officer or claiming to be water board officials with fake identification.’
Important advice
Make sure you take these points on board as it may only be so long before someone is fooled by a similar story. |
