How to make your property move as stress free as possible

Moving house can be a notoriously stressful process, one that many of us have come to dread. However, it doesn’t have to be all that bad; with some careful planning and preparation, it’s possible to transform your property move into a relatively stress-free experience. Here we share our top tips on how to ensure everything goes to plan.

  1. Start planning early
One of the most important things you can do to reduce stress in the moving process is to start planning your move as early as possible. This includes deciding on your moving date, taking time off work, booking a removals company such as Twilleys, and notifying your internet, water and other service providers of your move.
  2. Declutter and organise
Moving is the perfect time to declutter and get rid of the stuff that you no longer need in your life. Start by sorting through your belongings, and deciding what to keep, donate to a charity shop, or throw away. This might be a difficult process, but it will make the move much easier, and it can also help you to start fresh in your new home.
  3. Pack strategically
Packing can be a time-consuming task, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Start weeks before the move by packing items that you don’t use regularly, and label each box with its contents and which room it belongs in. This will make it much easier to unpack once you arrive at your new home.
  4. Hire a reputable removals company
If you decide to hire a removals company, make sure that you do your research and choose a reputable company. Look for reviews online, and ask for a formal quote that includes all costs upfront. This will help you to avoid any surprises on your already hectic moving day.
  5. Consider storage options
If you’re downsizing, or there’s a gap between moving out of your current place and moving into your new one, it can be beneficial to consider storage options. Many removals companies offer storage solutions as well, or you can choose to hire a separate storage unit. This will give you peace of mind knowing that your belongings are safe, ready for you to pick them up again when you’re all moved in.
  6. Have a backup plan
No matter how much planning you do, unexpected things can happen on your moving day. It’s important to have a backup plan in place, just in case something goes wrong, such as exceptionally bad weather or your new place not being ready. Consider having a friend or family member on standby to help out if needed.
  7. Take care of yourself
Moving can be a really draining experience, and it’s important to take care of yourself. Make sure to eat well, get enough rest, and take breaks when you need. It’s also important to stay positive, and try to focus on the excitement of moving to a new property.

While moving can definitely be a stressful experience, with careful preparation, it’s possible to minimise that stress. Start planning early, declutter, pack strategically, hire a reputable removals company, and take good care of yourself. By following these simple tips, you’ll be on your way to a smooth move to your new home.
